Discovering your entrepreneurial gifts, the strategies for positioning and outclassing your competition and the guidelines for accelerating your business for maximum growth – is all based on how well you know your sweet spot.
So What is a Sweet Spot?
I believe that you have identified a sweet spot when: everything seems to flow; you feel happy, competent, in sync with everything around you, uniquely talented, and predictably successful. It feels somewhat like magic or that special sauce that only you have, but, of course, it’s not. It’s the intersection of your talents, strengths, weaknesses, passions, purpose, power and differences that you can maximize to achieve your business or life’s intentions.
There are three types of sweet spots that will be discussed in this PDF:
The sweet spot for operating in your ‘Big Why’
The sweet spot fort Making Money
The sweet spot for Business Growth
The Sweet Spot of Your Big Why
This is that spot where you are doing what you love, what you are good at and what you want to do with the time you have on earth. One of the best ways to determine your ‘big why’ sweet spot is to know your passion, purpose and power.
I always encourage my clients to take time for what I call ‘creative silence’. It’s in these moments of silence – when you are in the flow of a ‘non-doing’ state of mind – is when your ‘big why’ comes to fruition and continues to grow over time. In those moments of silence, you should get in the habit of capturing your ideas and writing down your thoughts. It is also during those moments of silence that many of our well-known experts and leaders got their start.
Do you have a ‘big why’ for what you see as possible for helping people and for making the world? What’s your contribution going to be?
To ‘take it to a whole new level’, you need to enroll other people in your ‘big why’ and create accountability and support for yourself. You need to take a leadership role in your industry to make a bigger impact. You must leverage your expertise through joint ventures, resource partners and collaborations with others.
Your ‘Big Why’ is when you are able to maximize your fullest potential, fulfilling your purpose, following your bliss, being in your zone, and mastering your destiny.
If you have a purpose and passion for your work, you can develop a large client base of lifetime followers that will sustain your success for years to come.
The Sweet Spot of Making Money
The sweet spot of making money is when you are past the ‘start up struggles’ and you are now enjoying a big return on your investment. Or you are making enough money to live well (whatever that means to you). Or you have no outstanding loans, no major debts, no bad business partners or personal relationships that drain you — as a result — you experience very little stress and you are able to live a life-by-design. Now, for me, that’s sweet.
You must remember that there is a difference between making money and accumulating wealth. If you want to know more about the difference you can order a copy of Achieving Fit, Fine & Fabulous in Career, Business and Life. I devoted an entire chapter to discussing the difference between money and wealth.
According to Mark Twain, “the two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why.”
When purpose, passion and power come together, you end up with your sweet spot – that’s your ‘why’.
Money is any thing that is widely used and accepted in transactions involving the transfer of goods and services from one person to another. However Wealth is what you have left when you’ve lost all your money. Wealth consists of the things like your network, your track record, your access to resources, and your knowledge of your industry. When you have wealth you can start over any where and amass a large among of money over and over again even after you have lost everything.
When you have money, you have freedom. Look at it this way, money is when you put your energy in the right place; then combine it with all the actions you can take… from where you are… with what you have… to achieve what you desire.
The best description I’ve ever heard for experiencing ‘financial freedom’ isn’t about having a certain dollar amount in the bank. It’s knowing you can create income over and over and over again, even if somehow you lost it all. THAT is true freedom and truly sweet!
Much like the sweet spot of your big why, if one of these components is missing, achieving your sweet spot for making money and achieving wealth would be almost impossible.
The Sweet Spot of Business Growth
The sweet spot of business growth is determined by knowing your competitors and what they offer; knowing the product and service needs of your clients or customers and knowing what your company is capable of providing.
For those companies that want to stay in the sweet zone – or for those that know their sweet spot and their raison d’etre (reason for existence); then your being should never be reduced to just bullet points on your business plan.
Your business growth sweet spot should be based on your company’s mantra, mission, vision and core values. It is far more than bullet points, it is your purpose, passion and power that leads to maximum profits.
From a business perspective, a sweet spot is a place, time or experience in which a company’s brand, brand value, products, services, finances, leaders and marketers are in sync and in tune with their clients’ needs, aspirations and budget for purchasing.
Every successful entrepreneur knows that no one owes him/her anything until he/she provides value. Finding your sweet spot is learning to inhabit the space where you are most excited, competent and a provider of valuable skills, products or services.
This sweet spot is based on that junction where your own capabilities, the need of your customers and the definite distinction of your offerings from those of your competitors intersect.
It is that spot where your competitors either don’t offer the same product or service, they don’t teach something the same way you do, they have not differentiated themselves appropriately, they have not mastered the art of knowing their niche within their target market and they have not used multipliers (e.g. social media) to get their word out, or they just don’t have the ‘gift of presence’.
After you’ve determined who your competitors are, the next step would be to research what they offer. Then see how you can do it better, easier, faster or more innovatively. Voilà! You’ve found the sweet spot.
In order to achieve your sweet spot for your ‘big why’, making money or attaining business growth, you must master the Four
Steps to Sweetness which are:
1. Know Your Fundamentals
The most important principle to remember is to focus on what you have, not what you don’t have. You don’t necessarily need a lot of money or an MBA to start a business; but you do need a viable product or service, a clear differentiator in the marketplace, and a group of people who are willing to pay for it. Make a list of your fundamentals.
Know Your Strengths
One of the easiest ways to find your sweet spot is to make a simple list of what you enjoy, what you are good at and what you love doing. List as many things as possible; you should really give this some thought.
For example your list might include: painting, writing, speaking, solving problems, party planning, finding sponsors or advising people on their next move.
When making this list – don’t leave out anything.
Listen To Others
Ask others to tell you your natural talents – make a list. Stop dismissing what they say. When your friends, colleagues or family members say “You’re really good at: a) organizing meetings, b) playing matchmaker, c) baking cookies, d) simplifying the most complex, e) running raffles e) planning events, f) choosing the right clothes, g) making people laugh – listen to what they have to say”. They’ve recognized something in you that you take for granted but they find extremely useful and valuable.
What you also want to listen for are those million-dollar ideas and thoughts that others say in passing but they then becomes an ‘aha’ when you hear it.
Find The Solution
Now take a look at the above three prepared lists and identify which of those areas other people will have a need for and are willing to pay money to obtain.
For example, look at Millionaire Matchmaker Patti Stanger. She took what she enjoyed doing and was good at and turned it into a hugely profitable business. Guess what: she started out by working really hard at honing her skills into something people needed, wanted, valued and were willing to purchase.
You must really know yourself and others in order to turn your sweet spot into a full blown candy store!
If you need some serious help and lots of supportive hand holding to ensure you actually do what the world has been waiting for you to do since you were born, then the below Self Assessment to Determine Your Four Steps to Sweetness – is just for you.
